Protecting Roatan’s Shores and Reefs
At Meet Roatan, we’re passionate about preserving the natural beauty of our island, both above and below the waterline. That’s why our clean-up efforts extend to protecting not just our stunning beaches but also the vibrant coral reefs that make Roatan so special.
WHY WE DO IT?
Roatan’s shores and reefs are vital to the island’s ecosystem and culture. Our beaches welcome countless visitors who come to relax, explore, and connect with nature. Meanwhile, the coral reefs surrounding the island are teeming with marine life, offering protection against coastal erosion and supporting the livelihoods of many who call Roatan home.
Unfortunately, plastic waste is threatening both. Trash that washes ashore isn’t just an eyesore—it can be carried into the ocean, harming marine life and endangering the delicate balance of our coral reefs. By removing waste from our shores, we’re also keeping it out of our waters, helping to protect the reefs that play such an essential role in Roatan’s ecosystem.
WHAT ROATAN IS DOING TO REDUCE TO REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE
Roatan has taken meaningful steps to reduce plastic pollution. The island has banned single-use plastic bags, plastic straws, and foam containers, encouraging both residents and visitors to adopt more sustainable habits. Many local businesses are stepping up by offering biodegradable or reusable alternatives, and the community has embraced these changes with open arms.
These measures are creating a noticeable difference, but the fight against waste is ongoing. Clean-ups like ours work hand-in-hand with these efforts, addressing the trash that continues to arrive from external sources and ensuring that both our beaches and reefs remain pristine.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR CLEANS-UPS
Our recent clean-up at Buchard’s Bank was a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together. With an incredible turnout of volunteers, we collected 444 pounds of plastic—keeping harmful waste off our shores and out of our reef ecosystems.
This success wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our amazing community and partners who provided tools, organized logistics, and encouraged participation. Every person who joined in made a real difference for our island’s shores and reefs.
WHAT’S NEXT?
We’re not stopping here, with more trash washing ashore, we’re planning even larger clean-ups to tackle waste on both sides of the island. This includes a focus on reef health, ensuring we protect the marine ecosystems that make Roatan so extraordinary.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, you can be part of this mission. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming clean-up events, and join us in making a difference. Every small action adds up to a cleaner, healthier Roatan—for our beaches, our reefs, and our community.
Let’s keep Roatan beautiful! To everyone who has supported us so far: thank you! Together, we’re protecting the natural wonders of Roatan’s shores and reefs for generations to come.
