Cleaning Up Roatan With Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas

Cleaning Up Roatan With Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas

Let’s be real: When the world’s largest cruise ship – yes, we’re talking about Icon of the Seas, reaches out to you for a beach cleanup, you don’t just say yes. You grab a rake, rally the troops, and prepare to make waves (the good kind).

When Miguel, Royal Caribbean’s Environmental Officer, reached out to ask about joining one of our future cleanups, we realized something exciting – we didn’t have one scheduled yet!

So we turned this opportunity into something special: ‘Let’s create a cleanup together – just Meet Roatan and your crew

And holy mermaid tears, was it worth it!

The Mission: 50 Meters, 22 Volunteers, and a Mountain of Plastic

We picked up the Icon of the Seas crew (shoutout to the 22 superstar volunteers who traded their day off for gloves and garbage bags) and got straight to business. After a quick briefing on why Roatan’s beaches battle plastic (spoiler: It’s not just local – it’s floating in from all over Central America and beyond), we hit the sand.

Our toolkit included:

  • Heavy-duty reusable bags
  • Rakes, gloves, and determination
  • A scale to weigh the evidence (because numbers don’t lie)
  • Of course fresh water to keep ourselves hydrated!

The result?

242 pounds of plastic rescued from a 50-meter stretch. That’s roughly the weight of:

  • Two adult sea turtles
  • One very overpacked suitcase
  • Or, let’s be honest, way too many Starbucks cups

Why This Matters

This wasn’t just a cleanup – it was proof that tourism and sustainability can (and must) work together. The Icon of the Seas crew didn’t just show up; they asked questions, learned about Roatan’s ecosystem, and left even more fired up to protect it.

And honestly? So did we.

This collaboration lit a fire under us. At Meet Roatan, we’re doubling down on our mission:

  • Designing unforgettable trips (always)
  • Educating travelers on how to explore consciously
  • Protecting the island that makes those adventures magical

Because Roatan isn’t just a destination – it’s a living, breathing paradise that deserves the VIP treatment.

To the Icon of the Seas crew: You rock. Let’s do it again soon.

To future travelers: Ready to explore Roatan and leave it better than you found it? Let’s chat

P.S. 242 pounds down… who’s helping us tackle the next 242?
